What is a electoral vote?

A state gets one electoral vote for each senator and each district representative. This means each state has a number of electoral votes that's proportional to its population. When the popular vote is tabulated for a state, the winner is awarded the state's total number of electoral votes. The person with the most electoral votes wins. A majority is reached at 270 electoral votes.
