What is the inherent problem with a collective, prescribed belief system?

In my (humble) opinion, the problem is most likely that there'll be true believers, and then there will be those who just "believe with the crowd". The system of beliefs becomes a label-- you either believe or you don't believe, kind of like partisan politics, and I don't think faith should be that absolute.
