Cat picking on new kitten?

This happened to me wiv my 2 yr old cat and my 6 week old kitten . Everyone says keep them apart but in my case i felt it better just to let them both wounder around and if they came into contact wiv each other just to keep an eye on them . The kitten needs to know who is boss and by letting them both get to know each other whenever they come across one another is better than keeping them apart . Yes there will be growling and spitting but it took a month and my cats love each other and the older cat cleans the kitten and shares her food dish with her . They are the best off friends now .
