What happens if you let hydrochloric acid evaporate?

If you mix an unknown quantity of a freebase alkaloid with excess hydrochloric acid and evaporate the liquid, what is the result? Would the excess HCl evaporate or would it remain and make the alkaloid dangerously acidic?
