Is it really that rare to meet successful black men?

I am a black man in college majoring in biochemistry, and applying to medical school. When i tell people this ( no matter what race) why do they look at me like.... seriously? Furthermore, does promoting young black men to go into athletics keep them uneducated? All of my younger cousins all they want to do is play football? Why is this?
