Development of death and themes of novels...?

I am writing a paper on how death helps to develop themes and characters or novels. I used The Great Gatsby, The Scarlet Letter, and The Crucible. All I need is some input on what other people think also. I need either your opinions or some kind of article online or something. Any ideas?
