Cult worship how prevalent is it today?

Are the teachings of Islam Catholicism or Oriental beliefs the most successful cults ever, spanning so long as to be accepted as normal? now that we have no need for various shamen or priest or whatever you wish to call them, how in this modern society, archaic figurehead are still revered for spreading the cult ideals?
